“You know that lying to the police is a felony offense,” Detective Tom says to me, his gray eyes shining, those savage creases on his forehead deep like they’ve been carved into his skin with a jackknife.

Not that I know what a jackknife even looks like, I remind myself as I smile nervously at the Detective. Nolan’s staring at me with a weird look on his bruised face. It’s almost like he’s amused that I might have lied to the cops. Though there’s something else in those green eyes that isn’t amusement. Something that makes me feel warm and tingly even though I’m scared like a butterfly in a rainstorm.

“I didn’t lie,” I say, totally lying but pulling off a pretty darned serious tone, if I may say so myself.

“We spoke to your fiancé,” says the Detective, those gray eyes darting towards Nolan and then back at me. “He says he saw dozens of people run out of the warehouse like there was a fire in there.”

I force a smile and manage a casual chuckle. “Bertrand drank an entire bottle of wine at dinner,” I say. “I bet he also saw green elephants stampeding down the empty streets.”

“Pink,” says Detective Tom, the corners of his lips twitching like it’s the only way he can smile.

“Sorry, what?” I say.

“Pink elephants. That’s what drunks usually see in alcohol induced hallucinations.”

Nolan stifles a surprised laugh, and I smile and do my best to nod seriously like I just learned something about wildlife. I wait for another question about my statement, but it doesn’t come.

“You know, I happened to see your red-and-yellow Camaro on my way over here,” Detective Tom says to Nolan. He points the back of his pencil at Nolan. “I recognized the guy behind the wheel. Local bookie named Granger. He’s got a rap sheet, but nothing recent. I heard he’s running underground fights now, but those are just rumors. Was gonna pull him over and make sure he didn’t steal the car, but it wasn’t reported stolen so I had no probable cause. Besides, I wanted to make it down here before you woke up and skipped out on the hospital bill.” He grunts like that wasn’t a joke. Then he crosses his arms over his chest and sighs. “You in trouble with street debt, kid? Maybe I can help.”

Nolan doesn’t answer right away, and I can see that although he’s a tough nut to crack, getting sucker-punched (thanks to me!) like that probably still has him seeing stars. I have no idea what kind of stuff Nolan is into—for all I know, he’s a hardened street thug and the fighting is the tip of the iceberg! What am I doing here, anyway?! Am I seriously crazy?! Bertrand’s been calling and texting like mad, and I have no idea what to say to him!

I bite my lip and wince as I remember how I shoved Bertrand out of the way and ran into that warehouse in my stockings, calling 911
